Making Memories at the Basketball Goal

One of my favorite father/daughter movie scenes is from “Father of the Bride” when Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams play basketball in their backyard. That scene actually shows the passing of years as Kimberly’s character grows up. It’s a poignant scene of the changing relationship between a father and his daughter.

While the basketball goal in that scene isn’t important, the opportunity provided while the family continually shoots at the basketball hoop signifies the importance of access to a shared activity. A basketball goal in your driveway or on a concrete pad in the backyard offers years and years of memories as kids play against each other, parents and kids play and friends come and go to shoot some hoops.

The simplicity of owning a basketball goal is its greatest advantage. If you have a driveway that’s flat, you can use a goal. You don’t need a full or half-court area. The players don’t need to know a bunch of rules or have equipment. For casual play, all you need is a pair of good, play shoes. There are so many variations of games involving a basketball and a basketball hoop that make the game accessible at all skill levels.
